Chapter Eight

Hunter,

By now you’ll have noticed that I’m gone. Granted, you had to pry yourself out of my stepmother’s arms to figure it out. Don’t look for me, because I don’t want to be found. We’re through. As soon as I’m able, I’ll return the ring.

-Amala

Amala bit her lip. She hated to do this over email, but the sooner he knew, the better. The mouse wavered over the send button. She could do this. All she had to do was stuff the thoughts of how cruel it was to do this over email. He certainly hadn’t been concerned for her well-being when he’d courted her under false pretenses.

Besides, the sooner he knew they were over, the sooner she could work out what her prospects were. Yes. What are you going to do? She hit send and held back a sob.

Not that she wanted to cry over He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. It was the wide unknown looming in her future that had her tearing up.

Lord God, what am I going to do? I won’t be a wife. I won’t be able to escape—

A breath shuddered from her lips. She had escaped Mara. She was in a place where no one knew her location. She could rebuild a life anywhere she wanted. Her father had blessed her with bank accounts that only she had access to. That’s why they’d needed her. She had enough funds to dream of whatever future she wanted.

But never had she taken the time to do so.

“Amala?”

She jumped and turned to see Marcus filling the doorway.

“Are you done?”

“Yes. Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“Don’t hurt yourself now.” His eyes crinkled with the joke.

“Ha. Too late.” She smiled, suddenly nervous. What was this going on between them? Her isolated lifestyle left her no clues. You really don’t get out much, do you?

“I have a surefire cure for headaches.”

Wouldn’t that be headache medicine? Still, she’d play along. “What’s that?”

“Sledding.”

“Oh no.” She waved her hands in front of her. “No more outside activities.”

“Come on. Nothing more exhilarating than plunging down the side of a mountain on a sled.”

“Oh, that sounds so appealing.” She rolled her eyes. “You still owe me a movie.”

“We could do that, or we could go sledding.”

She shuddered. Would gravity betray her and let her fly off the side of the mountain? She shook her head. “No, thanks.”

“Well then, how do you feel about Christmas?”

“It’s the birth of our Savior, so I like it for that reason.”

“I sense a but.” He leaned forward as if in suspense.

“But I don’t have any good memories associated with it. My dad never celebrated it, and my stepmom...” She stifled the sigh in her heart.

“I see. We love Christmas around here. Maybe I’ll gather the uncles and we can decorate.”

“Like a tree?”

“And the grocery store. And the cabins. And the entrance to the orchard.”

Her mouth dropped. “All of that?”

“It’s Christmastime.”

He said it like that was all encompassing. And maybe it was, based off his past experiences, but she couldn’t comprehend it. But I want to. “Okay, that sounds.
